Validating CGMES models: the five levels of a robust check

Syntax, profile conformity, references, domain rules, fitness for the target process – why a formally valid file is far from a usable grid model.

Valid is not the same as usable

A CGMES export can pass every schema check and still fail in the target system. The reason is almost always the same: the check stopped at a level on which the actual requirement was never expressed. A robust validation therefore works in stages – from serialisation through profile and references to domain rules and fitness for the specific target process.

In practice this means giving every level its own rules and its own findings. A missing namespace is a different type of error from an unresolvable reference, and both differ from a topology that is consistent yet violates an internal planning convention. Only this separation makes findings interpretable for domain users.

The benefit shows on the second data release: rules formulated once run again, deviations become comparable and the quality of a model can be observed over time instead of judged only at isolated points.
